Reed
Burner
A Traditional reed player carries a very special coin in his gig
bag. The outer diameter of the coin is sized to the diameter of
the end of his reed. When the reed is worn down and nearly useless,
the reed can be placed on top of the coin. With a lighted match,
a small portion of the end of the reed is burned away as a portion
of the reed is exposed to fire while another portion is protected
by the coin.
In that tradition, we manufacture a reed burner which can be used
on four types of reeds: baritone, alto and tenor saxophones as well
as the soprano clarinet. Slots with the outer diameters of these
reeds are positioned on the end of an aluminum card. Additionally,
there is a strip of abrasive sand paper along the opposite edge
of the card. The sand paper can be used to trim down the edge of
the reed after burning.
